As part of Austin’s Cities Connecting Children to Nature Initiative, the Parks and Recreation Department, along with dozens of partner organizations, created the Austin Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights (COBOR). Austin City Council unanimously voted to pass the COBOR on January 26, 2017 with the support of more than 1,000 community members, key partners such as Austin Independent School District (AISD), and Mayor Steve Adler.

The creation of the The Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights (COBOR) illustrates what equitable access to nature should look like in Austin and establishes a common foundation and high aspirations for nature connection in a community.

Research has increasingly shown that children who have regular interaction with the natural world are more likely to be healthier, happier and perform better in school. We believe Austin has a vested interest in ensuring all children in our city have the opportunity to connect with the natural world and help create the next generation of environmental stewards who will conserve Austin’s quality outdoor space.
